This month Jemez Valley Fiber Arts is delighted to have Elizabeth Smith lead a workshop on silk dyeing. The workshop will run from 10 to 4 on Saturday, April 17th. Elizabeth will demonstrate the Japanese style of Shibori dyeing. Each participant will come away with two silk scarves. The cost will be $30, and materials (approximately $10) will be available for purchase at the workshop. Each person will need to bring one stainless steel stockpot/dutch oven that will not be reused for food preparation. Here are some pictures of the scarves Elizabeth will be demonstrating!

Basket weaving with Eileen Loro
The presenter for our next workshop is Eileen Loro. A sample of one of Eileen's beautiful baskets is currently on display at the Jemez Valley Public Library - stop by and give it a look! The class will be held from 10am to 4pm at Walatowa Visitor Center on March 20th. All basket materials will be available for purchase at the workshop. A guesstimate for costs: Everyone will need one hoop ($6) and rattan (about $8).
We look forward to seeing you there!

An Interview with Marina Beerli...
Our presenter for the month of February is Marina Beerli. Below you can learn a little bit more about Marina and the workshop she'll be leading.
What will you be presenting this month?
The Feb. 20Th workshop is called "Bags from Rags". Participants will work with a variety of techniques and materials including fabric, yarns, floss, rubber stamps, paints, photos, beads, wire and anything else they can think of to create a unique purse or bag. In addition to the materials available at the workshop participants are encouraged to bring an old piece of clothing - anything from a shirt, baby clothes, hat, pants, dress - any piece of clothing that is liked but no longer worn - which will be used as the base of the bag. Additionally there will be plain canvas bags available for purchase at the workshop which can also be used as a bag base.
How long have you been interested in Fiber Arts?
I work as a mixed media artist - as evidenced from all the materials besides fiber which we can play with at this workshop. Fiber has been incorporated into much of my work for a long time. My first artwork as a child was one of those store bought embroidery patterns.
Any special skills necessary for your workshop?
The only skills necessary for this workshop are a willingness to play, experiment, get messy and have fun.
How long have you lived in the Jemez Valley, and what brought you here?
My husband and I have been living in Jemez since May. Look out the window at Mother Nature- that's what brought us here
What do you hope people will take away from this workshop?
I hope that participants leave the workshop after having a fun-filled day of exploration and creative exploration. And also that they leave with a purse/bag that is beautiful to them.
Thanks Marina!

Our New Blog!
Welcome to the homepage of the Jemez Valley Fiber Arts Collective. Given its newness, I am sure that there will be many cosmetic changes as we figure out exactly what is useful and what is not. However, our hope is this will be a place where you can learn a little more about our upcoming events, presenters at JVFAC, and any other fiber-related happenings in our surrounding area. Thanks for stopping by!
